High tea: Authors’ Lounge (Bangkok, Thailand)

This is not your ordinary tea room, it has withstood time and is approaching over 140 years. It has hosted the likes of “The Prince of Wales; The Queen of Sweden; Audrey Hepburn; Elizabeth Taylor; and Marlon Brando are but a few of The Oriental’s famous guests.” In 2015 Authors’ Lounge was restored to its original facade in the nineteenth century, continuing to host for weddings, elegant functions and afternoon tea.

Ambience:
Authors’ Lounge is located in the west wing of The Mandarin Oriental Hotel, Bangkok. It imbues proper manners and behaviour complimented with high ceilings, white interior, Thai carvings and details on panelled light blue arched windows, set with a centred imperial staircase and a suave live guitarist playing in the background.

Food:
There are two choices at the Authors’ Lounge.
1.    Western Afternoon Tea Set
A selection of finger sandwiches: Green asparagus dips in clear tomato aspic on white sour dough bread Boiled egg and mayonnaise mini bagel Smoked ham, sun-dried tomato and honeydew melon Open-faced smoked salmon, sour cream and beetroot sandwich Cucumber, dill and cream cheese on oat bread Roulade of honey-glazed ham and cheese
Warm traditional plain and raisin scones Seasonal selection of home-made jams Devonshire clotted cream, mascarpone or butter Raspberry and pistachio financier
A selection of pastries: Caramelized milk chocolate and yuzu macaron Dark chocolate grué tartlet Minted light cream and strawberry sphere Vanilla yoghurt cream, streusel and pineapple chutney Paris-Brest hazelnut choux
2.    The Oriental Afternoon Tea Set
A selection of savouries: Lime-marinated crabmeat sandwich with lemongrass and chilli Minced chicken, chilli and black olive sandwich Mini Thai curry puff • Fried vermicelli pastry cup Roasted pandan chicken • Fresh Vietnamese spring roll Steamed Thai dumplings Wing bean salad with chicken and prawns in betel leaves Chicken and corn in a crispy pastry shell
Warm traditional plain and Thai mango scones Seasonal selection of home-made jams Devonshire clotted cream, mascarpone or butter
A selection of pastries: Kanom Sai Sai, sweet coconut pudding wrapped in banana leave Steamed pumpkin custard Assorted Thai marzipan Mango tartlet with vanilla cream Candy bale fruit chiffon cake Foi Thong Royal Thai orchid tea praline
Both have a choice of hot tea and the food is best shared with a friend/family, to get the best of both worlds. By accident, I found out you can also have unlimited tea without charge, the tea they serve is TWG from Singapore. Also, make sure, you come hungry as the morsels will fill you up to the rim.

Occasion:
A visit to authors’ lounge would be nice with a girlfriend or a date with your partner.

Service:
I had tried to book 2 months ahead just to be sure, apparently, you only need a month max to book a seating in this place. Upon arrival, the host was accommodating and seated us straight away. Our attendant too was friendly and answered all my questions without any hesitations. Pleasant service which was not rushed, very accommodating, changing our plates when they saw it was dirty and refilled my teapot upon request. Could not ask for more.

Pricing:
THB1,450 per tea set, we spent approximately THB3,000 for two people.

As I people watched and eavesdropped at the table beside us, who was the sous-chef (I assume) being interviewed by what looks like a blogger, experiencing the Authors’ Lounge made more sense and inviting. If you like high-tea and will be making a trip to Bangkok soon, make sure to put this place on your list. Dare I say its a better experience than the high tea at The Plaza (read that post here).
