I chanced upon this cookie store on a fellow mummy’s Instagram, thanks to her and TripAdvisor I found some information about this delicious place called Levain Bakery, like many of the places I visited in N.Y. it does not need any introductions and has lived past its critiquing stage, so everybody’s just enjoying their cookies and ordering boxfuls to take home.
Levain Bakery has 4 branches located all in N.Y.C. it was founded by a duo (Connie and Pam) in 1994, later branching out in 2000 and delivering all their baked goodies around the globe. The name Levain derives from the French term of “natural leavening agent traditionally consisting of flour, water and wild yeasts” thus Levain Bakery was born.
A small neighbourhood bakery that attracts both the locals and tourists of N.Y.C., four stops away from Timesquare subway, it is worth getting up early to haul yourself some boxes to take home. Its reasonable queue, blue shop front and skewed Papyrus like font, grabs your attention and makes you wonder what the small fuss is about. If you haven’t figured out why there are people lining up in this small space, you’ll just have to follow that heavenly smell and trust the kids chewing on their cookies and sipping tea at the front of the store.
Levain Bakery is not only popular for their cookies, they’re also popular for their bread, muffins, rolls, brioche and muffins. If you want to see their range, here is their website for all their products. But to tell you the truth, I only lined up for their cookies.
Cookie flavours:1. Chocolate Chip Walnut
2. Dark Chocolate Chocolate Chip
3. Oatmeal Raisin Cookie
4. Dark Chocolate Peanut Butter Chip
I took home a box of cookies of 9 pieces to take home as gifts, the only flavours I tasted were Chocolate Chip Walnut and Oatmeal Raisin Cookie, to my surprise Oatmeal Raisin Cookies was my favourite- not too sweet, a generous chunky piece, soft inside and chewy.
A nice take home gift from N.Y., just make sure your country’s customs allow it.
Service was friendly, professional and organised. Everyone in the shop was busy, no time to even catch their own breath I’m sure.
Cookies are only $4USD per piece, they can box it for you or just put in paper bags.
